A statement sent to Punch correspondent by the spokesperson for the group, Mudoch Agbinibo, said the facility was blown up at about 11:30pm on Sunday night.
The group taunted the NNPC authorities asking them to check their facility and decide whether to describe the incident as ‘system Anomaly’ as Exxon Mobil recently did after a similar attack on their facilities before later affirming that there had been an attack.
The statement read:
11:30pm on Sunday, the NDA blew up Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), gas pipeline at Nsit-Ibom L.G.A, Akwa Ibom state. NNPC should check their pipeline if it’s ‘system Anomaly’.”
However, the NNPC and security authorities have not yet confirmed or denied the attack. The Avengers have claimed responsibility for similar attacks on oil and gas facilities since renewed militancy in the region begun.
Their last attack carried out on a crude oil trunk line belonging to the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria in Batan, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, resulted to a massive oil spillage.
Information gathered disclosed that as of 4.32pm, the spill could not be controlled by a technical team from Pipelines and Product Marketing Company drafted to the spot as crude was said to still be gushing out of the attacked pipeline.
According to sources from the community who confirmed the attack, the militants shot sporadically for some minutes before detonating devices to blow up the pipeline. The sources also said that it was very difficult for the soldiers to locate the attacked pipeline because of its remoteness in the swamp of Batan.
