- Nigerians have been warned that MMM Ponzi scheme everyone is rushing now to invest in might be a disaster in the waiting as it has been revealed that the scheme is run by a convicted Russian fraudster. The warning came from the UK Independent. Read full details below.

UK Newspaper Warn Nigerians to Stay Away from MMM Ponzi Scheme, Wonder Bank
Nigerians have been given a sound and stern warning not to suffer the fate that befell most Zimbabweans recently by staying off MMM Ponzi scheme.

Thousands of investors are feared to have lost their money after a pyramid scheme run by a convicted Russian fraudster crashed, somewhat predictably, in Zimbabwe.

MMM Global has swept across Africa, with branches promising returns on investment of 30 per cent a month in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and some east African states.

It is masterminded by the former Russian politician Sergey Mavrodi, who went on the run when the original MMM – standing for Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox – collapsed in the late 1990s, losing investors an estimated $100m.

On its website, MMM Global unashamedly advertises itself as a scheme whereby new members “assist” older members by paying a fee to join. Older members are allowed to withdraw money after a certain period of time, and receive bonuses for encouraging others to sign up.

Mavrodi himself is reported to have gone into hiding after a separate entity designed to reward investors with the cryptocurrency bitcoin – dubbed the “Republic of Bitcoin” – folded in April this year.

And since then, a criminal investigation has been launched into MMM Global’s branch in South Africa, after a probe by the National Consumer Commission “found something” to suggest the scheme was acting illegally.

With Zimbabwe’s traditional financial institutions in jeopardy and the country gripped by an economic crisis, thousands turned to MMM Global as an investment that was avowedly independent of government control.

That’s despite a warning from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe that the scheme was fraudulent. RBZ warned members of the public that existing investors were “paid money not from genuine market investment of their funds, but from contributions made by new investors, until a point when the scheme can no longer attract new investors”.

Sure enough, users reported being unable to withdraw any funds earlier this month. One told The Herald newspaper: “When we started putting our funds in the scheme one could get assistance within seven days but things later changed to 14 days and when we were shut out the waiting period was 21 days.
“What it simply means is that the number of people in need of help has outnumbered the number of people joining. Right now we have nowhere to get our money which we invested.”
Despite the cautionary tales of Zimbabwe and South Africa – and indeed the original MMM scheme – a branch is now proving increasingly popular in Nigeria. The Central Bank of Nigeria has been forced to step in, warning consumers not to deposit money in any institution that is not insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

The bank’s comms director, Isaac Okoroafor, described MMM Global as “a new Ponzi scheme … that is spreading like wildfire”.
These people always come with very interesting propositions,” Mr Okoroafor said. “These are fraudsters who are just out there to collect people’s money and run away as soon as they hit their target.”
MMM Global’s members across Africa continue to defend its legitimacy, publishing screengrabs showing withdrawals as proof the scheme pays out.

In South Africa, where a Ponzi scheme is defined as any investment where the return is 20 per cent higher than the repo rate (currently 7 per cent), an anonymous member told business website Fin24: “MMM honestly tell people how it really works and do not promise people any return on the investments.
“As a donation programme, how is it possible to lose your donation? In MMM people ask each other to help them. It depends on the members themselves to maintain the continuation of the process of the provision of help to each other.”
A number of South African banks have now started shutting down accounts they believe could be linked to MMM, while in Zimbabwe the trusted mobile money transfer company EcoCash has distanced itself from the scheme, saying it is “not liable for any losses arising from the use of EcoCash to engage in illegal activities such as Ponzi schemes”.

17 Policemen Arrested For Taking Bribes
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 17 policemen for acts of misconduct, including taking bribes.

It was learnt that the policemen, who were arrested between October 6 and 28, 2016, were undergoing an orderly room trial.

This is just as 26 armed robbery suspects and 18 suspected kidnappers were also rounded up by the police during the same period.

A source told Punch that some of the arrested policemen risked dismissal, while others could be demoted.

The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, confirmed the arrest, adding that residents of the state should not hesitate to report erring officers to the command.

He said,
A total number of 17 policemen were arrested in different areas of the state for misconduct. The necessary disciplinary measures are being taken against them. “The command is alive to its responsibilities. We have zero tolerance for crime. Also, a total of 26 armed robbery suspects and 18 suspected kidnappers were arrested by the command. We recovered two AK-47 rifles, 14 locally-made pistols and 193 live cartridges from them. “In the different police operations, 17 vehicles were recovered from criminal elements, while 11 mobile phones were also recovered.”

Omg! Man arrested for raping, impregnating 15-year-old stepdaughter (PHOTO)
*Alleged raper*
The rape of underage girls especially by family members ,seems to be growing at an alarming rate...This 40-year-old man, Victor Emafolomi, has been arrested after allegedly raping his wife’s daughter, Keji(Pseudonym).

Emafolomi was said to have raped Keji on two occasions in October, threatening to kill her if she informed her mother.

According to a report by Punch, the first time she was raped, Keji''s stepfather had called her on the telephone to come home to prepare lunch for him.

She said;
“That afternoon, he was drunk. He beat me up when I resisted. I explained to him that he was like a father to me, but he didn’t listen.  He used a pillow to cover my mouth and raped me. He said he would kill me if I told my mother about the rape. “Two days after, he had sex with me again. That evening, he beat me up because I insisted that I would tell my mother when she came back from work. He went out and came back with two men after about 30 minutes. The men stared at me and left. He said they would be monitoring my movement and that if I reveal what he did to me, they would kill me.”
The suspect left home after the second encounter and did not return until about two weeks later.
“Before the incident, he had warned a boy called Owolabi to stay away from me because he didn’t want us to have a relationship,” Keji added.
Keji’s mother, Taiwo, suspected something was amiss when she became worried last Tuesday, October 24, when Keji's mensration failed to show up .
“I took her to a clinic in our area and it was confirmed that she was pregnant. I begged her to tell me who impregnated her, but she refused,” Taiwo said.
After much pestering, Keji was said to have confided in her mother, who reportedly passed out afterwards.
“I was very shocked, but I could not fault the revelation because my husband had abandoned home for some days and there was no misunderstanding between us. I think it was because of what he did,” she added.
However, the suspect, who hails from Delta State, refuted the allegations, saying it was Owolabi, who impregnated Keji.

He said,
“I am a driver. I left home because my wife is stubborn; she doesn’t take corrections. I left home to punish her so that she would change for better. “I never had sex with her daughter and I didn’t know anything about the pregnancy. I don’t want it aborted. When she is delivered of the baby, we will carry out a DNA test on the baby.”
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ambibola Oyeyemi, said the case would be transferred to the command’s headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation

- The Gunners were two goals down early on but were level by the interval and Ozil rounded off a fantastic night with a coolly-taken goal in the 87th minute

Review: 5 Things We Learned As Mesut Ozil scores late winner as Gunners reach knockout stages
Arsenal recovered from a horrific start in Bulgaria to snatch a late win courtesy of an 87th minute Mesut Ozil goal.

Arsene Wenger’s side were two goals down within 15 minutes of the start as Jonathan Cafu and Claudio Keseru gave the hosts a hugely surprising advantage.

Granit Xhaka got one back for the visitors on the 20-minute mark before Olivier Giroud scored his third goal in two games shortly before the interval.

With the scores level at 2-2 at half-time Arsenal fancied their chances of going on to win but it took them until three minutes before the end of regulation time to edge ahead.

Ozil rounded the goalkeeper before coolly slotting home and sending Arsenal’s travelling fans into ecstasy.

Our man Adrian Kajumba was at the match. Here’s are five things he learned…

1. Arsene Wenger’s team selection

Arsene Wenger has made surprise Champions League gambles in the past but on one of the occasions a weakened team would have been no surprise he went as strong as he could.

Arsene Wenger played his big guns in Bulgaria

Having admitted in the build-up Arsenal have “paid the price” for finishing second in their group too many times it was a clear sign of his determination to try and avoid that fate this time round.

2. Arsenal reach the knockout stages

Arsenal are through alongside PSG and both sides will now battle it out for top spot in the group.

An Arsenal win at the Emirates in the clash of the two later this month should seal the Gunners’ passage into the knockout stages as group winners.

3. Giroud proves his worth

He might lack the movement and pace of Alexis Sanchez but Olivier Giroud provided a reminder of his use to Arsenal.

Handed his first start of the season after a disrupted beginning to the campaign, Giroud marked it with a towering header.

The Frenchman hasn’t played as regularly as he would have liked this season

He offers an aerial threat none of Arsenal’s other striker options do so still has a big part to play.

4. Arsenal’s maturity and strength of character

Arsene Wenger has talked up his team’s maturity and character while claiming this is the best group he has had for some years.

When they went 2-0 down at Ludogorets the Gunners faced a big test of the character Wenger is now convinced they possess.

Just like at Sunderland, when they hit back after being pegged back, they passed another acid test to clinch all three points.

5. November off to a great start

This month has traditionally never been good for Arsene Wenger and the first 15 minutes here were not promising.

However, Wenger’s charges recovered to clinch a morale-boosting win and get November off to a great start.

- A cat was left so heartbroken by her owner's death she has spent a year living at her grave. The mourning moggy was first heard crying while lying in the earth at the burial plot in Central Java, Indonesia.

Passer-by Keli Keningau Prayitno, 28, tried to adopt the kitty but it returned to the same spot - cuddling the small blue headstone.

Remarkably, the cat walks every day to her former home where she is fed by the old lady's children - then returns to the grave.

Despite being given food and water by passers-by, the animal refuses to leave the grave, rolls in the earth and sleeps there every night.

Dad-of-one Keli said:
"Since the cat's mother died she has stayed here at the grave. She does not want to go home. She has been here for almost a year."I thought she was homeless and tried to help but every time she wold keep returning to the same place. "I saw her everyday and noticed that she was always there, but sometimes would leave for a couple of hours then come back.

I followed her and she was going to the home where she used to live and the lady's children would feed her. Then the cat would go back again to the same place. She sleeps there and meows. "It's very sad to see. It shows just how close animals are to their owners."
Keli said he had followed the cat and discovered the former owner had been an old lady called Kundari who had recently died.Despite being offered new homes, even a year later the cat can still be seen at the grave night and day
