A police corporal who was recently arrested for armed robbery, confessed to having supplied arms and ammunition to robbery gangs in various states, including Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa states.

Christ Oboko Onitsha Ugbo, was arrested after he allegedly led his gang on a series of robbery operations in some states in the Niger Delta region. He is currently being detained by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT)

According to Daily Trust, the 36-year-old, until his arrest was attached to a special squad code named C4I of the Rivers State Police Command and was also the resident pastor of a church at Choba, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Oboko, who has also been linked to several violent crimes in Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, Lagos and Edo state was said to have been deployed to C41 from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Rivers State Command, having distinguished himself as a sniper and crack detective.

Prior to his arrest, the office of the immediate past IGP, Solomon Arase received series of complaints about the notorious activities of the gang and subsequently directed the leader of the Special Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, to investigate the matter. Oboko was arrested following the arrest and confessions of one of his gang member identified as one Johnpaul Amandi.

"Aside from supplying members of my gang with police rifles and bullets, I also help keep their guns in my house without the knowledge of my wife and children."Oboko confessed.

"I joined the Nigeria Police Force in April 2003. I served at Borokiri Police Division, from there I went to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS before joining  C4I. I started car snatching in 2015 when I met Amandi, he was our informant. He lured me into robbery. I was only supplying them with arms. It all started when Amandi brought two vehicles. He gave them to one Victor Nwogu to sell. I met them doing the negotiation and from there, I offered to join them.

"I robbed the driver of a Toyota Camry at D-line area of Port Harcourt  and we  took the car to Victor in Owerri, I sold the car to victor for N200,000.  We were three and  I took N70,000 and I gave Amandi and Kelvin the balance to share. On the second operation, the three of us went for the job at  D-line and we stole three Camry cars from the park. We sold the vehicles to the same Victor in Owerri and he paid us N360,000. I got N150,000 as my share.  

"We also snatched a Toyota Corolla, from Elelanwan area at gunpoint from its owner and I took the car to Victor and he paid N250,000. I took N80,000 as my share and I gave the rest to Amandi and Kelvin to share.

"We also snatched a Toyota Spider car at GRA from the owner at gun point and we parked it inside Borokiri sand field.  But before we arrived in the morning the car had been removed,"

Lamenting, Oboko said, "I was always going to release them whenever they were arrested by the police and I don’t know what came over me.  I am the resident pastor of a church at Choba, in Port Harcourt. I don’t know what made me join Amandi in his evil business."

The out going Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Bisi Kolawole, who paraded the suspect disclosed that he and members of his gang were terrorizing Port Harcourt.

The gang members enjoyed full protection from Oboko, who bailed and defended them whenever they were arrested by the police. He provided fake vehicle documents for stolen vehicles and altered the vehicle engine and chassis numbers selling them, Ms Kolawole added.

Three suspected Islamic State (ISIS) suicide bombers who killed 43 people in a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul’s main airport this week were Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals, a Turkish government official said on Thursday June 30.

The suicide bombers opened fire to create panic outside, before two of them got inside the terminal building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. At least 239 people were wounded in the attack.

According to Reuters, the Turkey official who confirmed the terrorists’ nationalities, declined to be named because details of the investigation have not yet been released. Forensics teams had been struggling to identify the bombers from their limited remains, officials said earlier.

“A medical team is working around the clock to conclude the identification process,” one of the officials said.

Interior Minister Efkan Ala told parliament that evidence continued to point to ISIS responsibility and that the death toll had risen to 43, of whom 19 were foreigners. Ala said the identity and nationality of one of the bombers had been determined but did not comment further.

The pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper said the Russian bomber was from Dagestan, which borders Chechnya. Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper named him as Osman Vadinov and said he had come from Raqqa, the heart of Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria.

The Russian interior ministry said it was checking information about Vadinov. A spokesman for Kyrgyzstan’s state security service said it was investigating, while the Uzbek security service had no immediate comment.

The quarterfinal stage of Euro 2016 gets underway on Thursday night with Poland taking on Portugal at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. Portugal are yet to win a match in 90 minutes at Euro 2016.

Poland became the first side to reach the last eight after beating Switzerland 5-4 in a penalty shootout, with the scores level at 1-1 after extra time. Kuba Blaszcyzkowski continued his superb Euros record, opening the scoring in the first half. Blaszczykowski has scored or assisted five of Poland’s six goals in the competition’s history.

Poland were pushed back in the second half and conceded late on when Xherdan Shaqiri’s spectacular overhead kick beat Lukasz Fabianski. The Swansea keeper was in a great form on the day and looks set to keep out Wojciech Szczesny, should the latter recover from a thigh injury.

Poland converted all five of their penalty kicks in the shootout, with Granit Xhaka’s miss for Switzerland proving costly.

Portugal creeped through to the quarterfinal with a narrow 1-0 win over Croatia. Portugal were outplayed for the majority of the 90 minutes but held on for their fourth consecutive normal-time draw. The match looked to be heading for a penalty shootout before substitute Ricardo Quaresma struck in the 117th minute.

Speaking after the match, Portugal headcoach Fernando Santos said: “Sometimes you have to be pragmatic. It’d be nice to play pretty but that’s not always how you win tournaments. Both teams went into this thinking this was a key step towards the final and luck was on our side – we earned it. Next up, Poland.”

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to add to his 2 goals and 2 assists while his Polish counterpart Robert Lewandowski is still to get off the mark in France. Teenage midfielder Bartosz Kapustka will be back in contention for Adam Nawalka’s side, having served a 1-match suspension in the previous round.

The match will be Poland’s second at the Stade Velodrome, following their 1-0 win over Ukraine in the group stage. The winner of the tie will face one of Wales or Belgium in the semi-finals in Lyon on July 6.

The Federal Government has declared July 5 and 6, 2016 as public holiday to mark Eid-el Fitri Celebrations.

The Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.), who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, on Thursday in Abuja, urged all Muslim faithful and Nigerians in general to extend the spiritual benefits of Ramadan, which are love, peace and justice to their daily living and through this contribute to the development of the nation.

A statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Bassey Akpanyung said Dambazau also urged Nigerians to use the opportunity of “this spiritual rejuvenation to reflect on the imperative of unity and peaceful co-existence in strengthening the bond of togetherness for a strong, virile nation.”

The minister, while wishing Nigerians a peaceful celebration, urges total support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s avowed determination to bequeath to the nation an enduring political legacy, it added.

The Federal Government has hit back at the Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, over statements they made last Tuesday after they were arraigned for allegedly forging the Standing Rules of the upper legislative chamber.

The government said it would be better for Saraki and Ekweremadu to either honourably resign or face the judicial process.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, said statements issued by both Senate leaders targeting the government and President Muhammadu Buhari as an individual as if the executive arm was the initiator of the forgery case against them was not acceptable.

Lawal who also signed a statement yesterday said the separate comments by “the two leaders of the Senate also gave this erroneous impression that by their arraignment, it is the entire Senate and indeed, the legislative arm of government that is on trial.

They want the public to believe that their prosecution is in utter disregard by the executive arm of government for the constitutional provisions of separation of powers and that preferring the forgery case against them is a vendetta exercise.”

He said the two separate statements conveyed ‘‘messages that are far from being complementary to the person and government of President Muhammadu Buhari.’’

‘‘Senator Saraki in his statement clearly insinuated that Mr. President is not in control of his administration and that a cabal now runs the federal administration.

‘‘On the part of Senator Ekweremadu, he insists that President Buhari is exhibiting dictatorial tendencies that can derail our democracy.”

Although he said the case is in court and the judicial process must be allowed to take its course, Lawal absolved the executive arm of government of blame, saying: “It is important to emphasize that this case involves only the four accused persons and should not be presented to the unsuspecting public as involving the entire Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The complaint leading to the forgery investigation was reported to the police by some aggrieved senators who specifically accused certain persons.

It is not the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that is involved and definitely not the House of Representatives.

‘‘To bring the National Assembly as a body into this court case is totally unwarranted. It can only be for other purposes and reasons outside the investigation and legal proceedings.”

He explained further that it was a case of alleged forgery, which cannot be preferred against an institution but on individual.

Citing the case of former Speaker Salisu Buhari, who forged a certificate showing that he graduated from a Toronto University, Lawal said: “What he did was to resign, honourably.

The matter did not even go to court. In that particular case, it was never orchestrated as a matter for the National Assembly. The individual involved did not drag the entire legislature into the matter.”

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has cried out that the impact of the renewed destruction of oil assets in the state's oil producing parts has gone so bad that the state is now unable to pay salaries regularly.

Speaking at the Government Office Annex in Warri on Wednesday where he convened a stakeholders meeting, the governor said: “The larger Nigerian government has been in financial crisis over dwindling oil prices. Increased production would have helped cushion the impact but instead we are faced with destruction of oil assets.

“Dealing with dwindling oil prices and destruction of oil assets, we are now producing just half of our quota. And we are all really worried because of the greater effect is on Delta State.

"Before now we receive up to N20billion monthly, but what we have now is so low.

Last time we got only N3.4billion. Last month what we received has dropped to N3billion. We now get 1/7th of what we use to have.”

The governor said, going by the current financial position, the state was no longer in a position to pay salaries regularly just as Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, has also nosedived.

“We met a wage bill of N7.4 billion. Our workforce has been unchanged. With biometrics and rationalization, we trimmed that to about N6.8 billion. With the situation, we have in our hands, we are not in position to pay workers regularly anymore.

“If we produce our normal volumes, we won’t have it this bad. We have had to reduce support to the councils. And apart from poor income from Federation Account, IGR has also gone down because money is not circulating.

“I do know that we were receiving reasonable Pay As You Earn, PAYE of up to N1.5bn and N1.6bn monthly. That has gone down. We should realise there’s a challenge. Political office holders, traditional rulers should build peace. Delta State has been on the news for the wrong reasons and that’s not where we want to be.”

Reports gathered that the student who recently concluded her nursing course was abducted at night by unknown men from her off-campus residence at Ilishan Ogun state on Sunday 26th, of June 2016.

The family member appealed to the general public to help in the search and contact the Police station if there is any useful information about the missing student.

A body guard attached to President Muhammadu Buhari, Corpor*l Hassan Aminu, has reportedly been arrested by the Department of State Service, DSS, over his alleged link to Boko Haram insurgent.

Aminu is currently in custody and is being interrogated by the secret police.

A DSS operative who pleaded not to be mentioned confirmed the development to Daily Post.

According to the source, “It is true. He was arrested and we are currently interrogating him.”
