UPDATE | JAMB Withdraws All 2016 Admission Lists Sent to Universities
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has withdrawn the list of recommended candidates for admission earlier sent to universities and other tertiary institutions, it said in a statement on Sunday.

A statement by JAMB's head of media, Fabian Benjamin, reads:
This is to ensure that the University Senate perform its statutory responsibility of conducting the selection of candidates and refer it to JAMB for confirmation in line with the admission criteria of merit, catchment and educationally disadvantaged states as directed by the Hon Minister of Education at the policy committee meeting. The earlier list was sent to help fast track the process of admission so as to allow other tiers of institutions also conduct their admission. Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions. The Board regrets any inconvenience it’s proactive step would have caused the tertiary institutions.”

A seven-year-old boy, Chibuike Miracle Oramalu, has been arraigned before a magistrate’s court in Enugu over alleged murder.

On May 29, in the Independence Layout area of Enugu state, Chibuike, a primary two pupil, accidentally fired a gun, which killed a 12-year-old boy, Oluebube Boniface.

The gun belonging to Mr. Edwin Oforma, an employer of Chibuike’s mother, where she worked as a cleaner and housekeeper, was accidentally fired by Chibuike as he was instructed by Oforma’s son, Chukwunanu, after discovering the gun in Oforma’s room while making the bed.

Chibuike’s mother, Nwakaego, narrates how her son got involved in the alleged murder, disclosing that on the fateful day, while she was away, the son of her employer, Chukwunanu, a National Youth Service Corps member, asked Chibuike and his 10-year-old elder brother, Ifeanyichukwu, to clean and tidy up his father’s room.

The two children proceeded to carry out the assignment – Ifeanyichukwu swept the room while Chibuike laid the bed.
In the course of the assignment, Chibuike saw a gun near the bed and took it to his brother, Ifeanyichukwu, who asked him to return it.

But, according to the mother, while Chibuike was returning the gun, he mistakenly pulled the trigger, releasing a bullet which hit the late Oluebube, who was in the next compound, in the chest. Oluebube died instantly.
Following the incident, the boy was initially detained by the police from May 30 till July 13, when he was released.

Although Chibuike’s mother, Mrs Nwakaego Oramalu, and her lawyer, Mr. Olu Omotayo, of the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, had raised the alarm over the little boy’s detention, the Enugu State Police Command claimed he was in “protective custody.”

About two weeks after his release, Chibuike was on Friday arraigned, without prior notice, before an Enugu Magistrate’s Court over alleged conspiracy and murder, alongside Mr Oforma, the owner of the gun.
Chibuike and Oforma were, in count one, before Magistrate Hillary Asogwa, accused of conspiring among themselves to commit murder.
In count two, the seven-year-old boy and Oforma were accused of murdering Oluebube, while Oforma, in count three, was charged with unlawful possession of the double-barrelled gun.

Represented by his Lawyer, Omotayo, who argued before the court that the boy was a minor and therefore incapable of committing crime, Chibuike was released to his mother on bond but Oforma, the owner of the gun, was remanded in prison custody.

Two Nigerian siblings aged 11 and 10, were rescued in the Mediterranean on Friday after losing their mother while on a dangerous journey to Europe.

The heartbreaking photos of the boy and girl by Associated Press were published by Dailymail as they sobbed and comforted each other aboard a rescue boat.

A migration group had said more than 3,000 people had died while trying to cross the Mediterranean this year, nearly a 60 percent increase from this time in 2015.

The latest rescue came after Italy on Thursday launched a hard-hitting campaign on the Internet, TV, radio and social media to warn African migrants of the dangers they face in trying to reach Europe.

A man identified as Jacob Nwachukwu has reportedly cut off his wife’s left hand over an allegation of infidelity at Abala in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
It was gathered that the victim, Nwadiokeonu Nwachukwu, is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital in Aba, while her severed hand had been taken to her husband’s village at Abala for burial.

A female co-tenant of Mrs. Nwachukwu, who pleaded anonymity, told Southern City News that the couple had lived in the city for years before the husband lost his job and had to relocate to the village, leaving his wife, a trader, in the city.

She said, “The couple had always quarreled any time the man visited his wife in the city, to the extent that all the tenants are aware and intervened in their quarrels.”
It was gathered that the husband visited his wife on the fateful day and during their usual quarrel, brought out a machete, cut off the wife’s hand and left with it to the village while neighbours rushed her to the hospital.
The source alleged that Mr. Nwachukwu’s intention was to kill his wife with the machete but missed the target as the woman was said to have used her hand to defend herself before it (hand) was severed.
The wife’s suspected lover is said to be on the run while her landlord reported the incident to a police station close to the hospital along Ogbor Hill, where the woman is currently on admission.

A trigger-happy policeman has killed a patent medicine dealer, Tochukwu Iro. It was said gathered that Tochukwu, 42, who just got married, was shot on Wednesday by the policeman, said to be from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, because the deceased refused to stop when ordered to do so.

A source said, “The incident happened on France Road. The man was shot because he allegedly did not stop when he was ordered to do so by the police.

“He was shot in the thigh. Other SARS operatives immediately rushed him to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

As news of the death of Tochukwu spread, many angry youths of Igbo extraction took to the streets in Sabon Gari to protest against the shooting.

But the Chairman of Igbo Traders Welfare Association, Kano State, Chief Emmanuel Amadi, said Tochukwu died on Thursday, 24 hours after he was shot.

Amadi stated that the protesting youths wanted the police to investigate the shooting and bring the offender to book.

“The protesters are demanding justice. On our own, we have pleaded with them not to take laws into their own hands. All we are asking for is that the Tochukwu's killer be made to face justice,” he said.

Kano State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Magaji Majia, said, “The Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Rabiu Yusuf, has ordered the arrest and detention of the team leader and his men.

“He also summoned the elders of the Igbo community in Kano to a meeting, where he sympathised with them and assured them that justice would be done.

“The outcome of the investigation will be made public as soon as investigation is completed.”

The Turkish government has urged the Federal government to close down the 17 Nigerian-Turkish International Colleges (NTIC) in Nigeria, saying they all belong to Fetullah Gulen accused of sponsoring the July 15th failed military coup in Turkey.

The Turkish High Commissioner to Nigeria, Hakan Cakil, disclosed this while hosting the vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Shehu Sani yesterday July 28th.
We have formally and verbally made our demand to the Nigerian government through the Foreign Affairs Minister. My country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has spoken to Mr. Geoffrey Onyema on this. We are requesting for the close down of all the 17 schools. All the schools in Nigeria belong to the Gulen movement and not the Turkish government. They are using the schools to recruit followers for terrorism. This is threatening the peace in our country as they are using funds they are generating in Nigeria for terrorism. Gulen is a terrorist organization using rhetoric of dialogue, peace and partnership to deceive people. It is being presented as a kind of Muslim missionary but they are abusing the religion. They misled the public by putting Turkey in the name of their school. We don’t have schools in Nigeria, we have in other countries but not in Nigeria. Gulen movement staged a coup and they failed. Investigations prior to the coup attempt had revealed that the followers of the Gulen group infiltrated into various state structures including the police, army and judiciary.”he said Reacting to the allegations, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges, Cemal Yigit in a telephone chat with DailyTrust, denied the claims made by the ambassador and said it was a deliberate attempt by the Turkish government to smear the image of the colleges “I am not aware of the information but it is possible since that is how they do the defamation campaign. It is so unfortunate that the smear attack is even reaching Nigeria. Nigeria is a sovereign country and it is as if the Turkish Ambassador has the luxury of giving Nigerian authorities instructions on the place which employed about 2,000 Nigerians. Let me say that the NTIC, Nizamiye Hospital, Nigeria Turkish Nile University under the First Surat Group of Companies are privately invested here by private investors. These groups of companies have nothing to do with the Turkish government and they are non-governmental and non-political companies. Their responsibility is to the Nigerian authorities. The schools and hospitals are open; there is no way they could be closed. This is just misinformation disseminated by the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria.”

We'll focus on solid training for young Nigerians Says VP Osinbajo
*Receives special message from Guinea-Bissau
Besides encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit among the Nigerian youth, focus should also be on ensuring that young Nigerians are well-trained in whatever discipline or professional calling they may chose, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

While noting the importance of entrepreneurship, Prof. Osinbajo said “we should emphasize training too, solid training. For whatever you are, you can be the best in it... Building the very best minds should be the focus.”

According to him, “if you are a graduate of history, you should be so well-trained to be the best historian,” the VP said during a research presentation to him by Course 24 Participants of the National Defence College.
I think we should bear in mind also that even if you are not an entrepreneur, but you are competent in whatever your field of endeavour or whatever your discipline is, if you are well-trained in any type of profession, you are a major contributor to the GDP, you are a major contributor to the well being of the society,” the VP declared.
While commending the participants for their research titled “Youth Bulge in Nigeria: Implications for National Security,” Prof. Osinbajo added that government would “still continue to maintain focus on very good solid training so that whatever you are, you can contribute to the society.”

The presentation noted the significant youth population in the country could be turned into a positive engine for national growth through entrepreneurship. Captain O. A. Olodude, of the Nigerian Navy, who made the presentation on behalf of Course 24 participants stated that if the youth are not harnessed through schemes such as NYSC Entrepreneurial Scheme, training in agriculture, ICT and others, to tackle unemployment, they would affect the society negatively.

Earlier, the Commandant of the National Defence Collage and leader of the delegation, Rear Admiral Samuel Alade, said the Course 24 has 130 Participants 7 of which are from other countries including Niger, Republic of Benin, Ghana, Zambia and Sierra Leone. He revealed that the next course will have participants from Germany, Turkey, Brazil and India. He stated that in the 25 years of the Collage, this is the first research presentation of its kind. Vice President Osinbajo, who promised to send the recommendations of the research to relevant government agencies, has also been recognized with the Distinguished Personality Award of the National Defence Collage.

In another development, the VP received on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari a delegation from the government of Guinea Bissau led by Prime Minister Baciro Dja. The Prime Minister came as a Special Envoy of President Jose Mairo Vaz of Guinea Bissau to deliver a special message.

Vice President Osinbajo commended the government of Guinea Bissau for its constitutional and peaceful management of the country’s affairs noting that “at the end of the day the whole purpose of government is to help the people not to harm them in the process of political conflict."

While some people are already jostling to becoming chairman of PDP under the Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee, the 'authentic' chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has won again.

The leadership crisis rocking the opposition PDP deepened today (Thursday), as Federal High Court in Abuja sacked the Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee.

The court, in a ruling by Justice Okon Abang, held that every action the Committee had taken since it emerged at the Port Harcourt convention on May 21, amounted to a nullity.

“Parties have an uncompromising duty to obey court order until it is set aside. The Lagos Division made orders on May 12 and 20, forbidding the PDP from removing the Sheriff-led Caretaker Committee. That order is still subsisting.

“Having regard to the order of the court, PDP had no lawful authority to hold the convention that led to the emergence of the Markafi-led Committee.

“The convention was unlawfully held and the Caretaker Committee was unlawfully and illegally appointed and could not take any legal decision for the PDP in view of the subsisting order of the Lagos Division of this court.

“Consequently, any action taken by the Markafi-led Committee, including the purported mandate for legal representation in this matter is hereby declared illegal.

“If the Markafi-led Caretaker Committee, as apostles of impunity, missed their way to the Port Harcourt division of this court, that court could not have conveniently assumed jurisdiction to set aside the earlier decision of the Lagos Division.

“I hold that the Port Harcourt division of this court cannot make an order to neutralise the potency of the Lagos Division of this court dated 12 and 20 May“.

He warned politicians not to cause disaffection among judges of the High Court, saying “the culture of impunity must stop in this country”.

He stressed that, “Ali Modu Sheriff is the National Chairman of the PDP. Any decision not taken by the Sheriff-led Committee is not binding on the PDP”.
