A cry for justice is trailing the cases of gang-rape and murder of two girls in Bayelsa as a women rights group have called for authorities to prosecute the culprits. In another outrageous case of impunity, two teenage girls were violently gang raped to death at different locations in the Bayelsa state capital, Yenagoa.
Totally outraged by the barbaric and shameful act, Women Lawyers under the aegis of International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) condemned the act and noted that the perpetrators must face the full weight of the law.
According to Nigerian Tribune, the Chairperson of FIDA, Barrister (Mrs.) Dise Ogbise Erhisere and other professionals in state expressed anger of the gang related and allay the fear that parents would pay through their nose to get justice, even as they urged parents to always seek redress in court over violation of their teenage girl child.
Noting that FIDA would support them to win the legal battle, Ogbise-Erhisere said two teenage girls between the ages of 15 and 16 years old that were violently raped to death by gang of boys at difference location in the state.
Accordingly, FiDA pointed that the 15year old girl (names withheld) was raped by a gang of boys at uncompleted building along the D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha Expressway, while the 16 years old girl suffered same fate at another location, weekend in Yenagoa.
The female lawyers, regretted, the refusal of victims' parent to seek arrest of the rapists and pursue prosecution.
Ogbise-Erhisere, expressed disappointment over a ridiculous settlement proposal made by one of the suspect’s parent in one of the reported cases over the weekend to offer the victim N10, 000 and a rubber of rice to close the case.
The Chairperson called on victims' parents not to settle rape cases outside of the court in order for offenders to face the full weight of the law as well as serve as a deterrent to others.
Ogbise-Erhisere, expressed her displeasure over the act against innocent girls in society who go about their lawful duties and call on relevant security agencies to be alert to curb the increasing cases of this social vice.
She therefore advised parents to warn their male children to desist from the shameful act that attracts the wrath of God and punishable by life imprisonment in law
