Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he foresaw and warned about Nigeria’s current recession two years ago, but said he was ignored.

Mr. Obasanjo said he was concerned about recession when he saw how “recklessly” the Goodluck Jonathan administration spent the country’s resources.

The former president spoke on Saturday in an Independence Day message at a lecture organised by the Youth Fellowship of Owu Baptist Church, Abeokuta.

Whoever that has lived to witness the celebration of today should thank God,” he said. “Things are not what they should be, but we should pray that next year will be better than this year. We thank God for those who are alive, we prayed for the souls of those who have laboured for these country and who have passed on to rest in perfect peace.”

Mr. Obasanjo said one of the major issues threatening the peace of Nigeria now is the high level of unemployment.

Unemployment is a major problem in the country today and if we don’t take care, it will consume all of us. In fact, the rising unemployment is a time bomb,” he said.

The former president recalled how he got five job offers immediately he completed his secondary school education at Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta.

He said he received offers from the United Africa Company (UAC) and Moore Plantation, Ibadan, among others. He said the situation is different today in the country.

Mr. Obasanjo said the businessman, Aliko Dangote, told him that six Ph.D. holders were among applicants seeking jobs with his company as truck drivers.

Mr. Obasanjo said the high rate of unemployment was responsible for youth restiveness in the country, warning that the situation should be tackled with all the “seriousness” it deserves before it get out of hand.

The former president said the country cannot develop if it pays no attention to agriculture.

“That is why we have to take it as a key of our development else the many educated Nigerians who have no job are like time bomb, sooner than later, it will explode,” he said.

Edo State Governor-elect, Mr. Godwin Obaseki

Edo State Governor-elect, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said no member of the opposition political parties should expect to make his cabinet after his inauguration on November 12, Punch reports.

Obaseki, who spoke during an interactive session with journalists, noted that though he could explain the focus and vision of his administration to them, none of them would be appointed in his administration.

The incumbent Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, had at the inception of his administration in 2008, appointed three members of the Peoples Democratic Party into his cabinet.

Obaseki said,

 “I will not be able to accept anybody from the opposition political parties as a commissioner in my cabinet.”

The governor-elect said he would immediately form a team for the purpose of preparing the 2017 appropriation budget.

According to him, he has to prepare the budget in order to hit the ground running because he has only four weeks to present it before the House of Assembly embarks on a recess.

Obaseki added that apart from the creation of jobs and economic empowerment, the focus of his administration would not be different from that of the incumbent governor.

Obaseki, who noted that the opposition had capitalised on the protests by some pensioners prior to the governorship election, said only 700 pensioners, out of the 11,700 who retired from the state civil service, had yet to be paid.

Obaseki said,

“Some people took advantage of the electioneering and tried to get at us. People had hoped that with the anxiety to win election, we would have resolved the issues.’’

Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

The Turkish government has arrested over 50 Nigerian students upon their arrival at the capital city of Istanbul, it has been reported.

The detained Nigerians were all escorted to a room and their passport confiscated by Turkish police, according to Thisday.

The detainees are mainly students of Fathi University, a private university in metropolitan Buyukcekmece district of Istanbul.

Turkish police claimed the students belong to a terrorist organisation and were offered to be transferred to government schools on the condition to pay the same fees as private universities, Thisday further reported.

Fathi University happens to be among the 2099 schools, dormitories and universities shut down by the Turkish government in the wake of the July 15th failed coup in Turkey.

The schools and universities were accused by the Turkish government to be terrorist schools because they have links with Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen, whom the Turkish government had accused of being the mastermind of the coup in Turkey.

17 Turkish schools in Nigeria had earlier been requested by the Turkish Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr. Hakan Cakil, to be closed down by Nigerian authorities for alleged links to the Hizmet movement.

Protesting Senior staff members of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, have taken their grievances to a new level after presenting the school's embattled Vice Chancellor, Olusola Oyewole a loaf of bread and a bottle of coca cola drink as a birthday gift as he clocked 61 on Friday.

The man who have been in serious battle with the workers over allegations of financial fraud levelled against ‎him and the pro-Chancellor of the university, Adeseye Ogunlewe. Although the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has interrogated the two officials and is now investigating the matter, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities in the school have continued with their protest, demanding the removal of the VC.

So to send their grievance home, they organised a mini-birthday bash and presented the V.C a coke and bread at his office, Friday afternoon.

They were however intercepted by the institution’s Chief Security Officer, Peter Bolarinwa, who promised to deliver the bizarre package.

They also demanded the reinstatement of three of their colleagues, Abdulsobur Salam, Lasun Somoye, and Abimbola Bankole, who were suspended for sending a petition to the EFCC, leading to the investigation.

At least, four people have been left dead and many injured after a petrol tanker caught fire and exploded along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident which happened around 3:05pm on Saturday, caused heavy traffic on the road. According to an eyewitness identified as Maxwell Olusegun Adegbenro, many have been left in shock over the incident.

He wrote:

"He said he will make millions a ransom for my life. Promised me his banner of love now I'm a witness". Just now, 3:05pm, Mobil Tanker conveying petrol caught fire along Lagos-Ibadan express way. My car was just opposite in top speed when the tanker exploded. Four persons has been declared dead but I live."

Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has spoken after his wife was released. Emefiele spoke on Saturday to newsmen after the gallant efforts of the Nigerian police helped in rescuing his wife at Ugoneki near Benin City late Friday.

Expressing his joy he said:

 “I am grateful security agencies for their gallantry in bringing my wife back home within 24 hours in compliance with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari. “My gratitude to the Delta and Edo State governments, friends and well wishers who, through their actions, prayers and goodwill, helped to bring this harrowing experience to a joyful end. I reaffirm my resolve to continue to serve the nation diligently with all his heart without any fear of intimidation.

According to a report by SaharaReporters, it is believed Emefiele gave the kidnappers N80 million ransom. The abductors had earlier  demanded N1.5 billion for Mrs. Emefiele to be released.
