The Presidential Villa, Abuja is currently wearing a new look ahead of Nigeria’s 56th Independence anniversary holding on Saturday, October 1.

Programmes earmarked for the anniversary which the government described as low-key started with an interdenominational service at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja on Sunday.

A jumat service and anniversary lecture are slated for the National Mosque, Abuja on Friday (today).
The final programme is Presidential Change of Guard scheduled to hold at the forecourt of the
Presidential Villa on Saturday.


Ahead of that programme that will attract members of the diplomatic corps, top government officials and other friends of the nation, workers were on Thursday busy giving the Presidential Villa a facelift.

All the white walls in the seat of power were repainted while the white-and-black road setbacks were also retouched.

Flowers and trees were also trimmed.

Workers of the construction giant, Julius Berger, saddled with the maintenance of the seat of power, carried out most of the exercise.

Government officials were also seen changing the numerous national and commander-in-chief’s flags at strategic places within the premises.

Canopies were also being erected in the forecourt where the event would hold while chairs were also being moved to the venue.

During the programme scheduled to start by 3pm on Saturday, there will be a ceremonial change of guards by soldiers attached to the Brigade of Guards who are in charge of the security of the
President and the Federal Capital Territory.

Buhari will inspect the guard of honour at the ceremony, cut the anniversary cake, sign the anniversary register and release pigeons to symbolise peace.

He will be assisted by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Muhammed.

A 49-year-old man, yesterday, gave a graphic description of how he had been sleeping with his 15-year-old daughter in their Oko-Oba home in Abule-Egba area of Lagos State.
The suspect, Tony Ehumadu, who hails from Mbaise area of Imo State, was caught in the act by his wife, a Customs officer. Ehumadu, a businessman, was arrested after one of his brothers-in-law reported the case to the police.

He admitted to have slept with his Junior Secondary School 1 daughter twice, adding that the first instance was under the influence of alcohol. According to him,

 “I did the abominable act with my eldest daughter. But I only raped her twice. I don’t know what came over me. I am convinced that forces beyond me led me into committing the crime. “Both incidents happened on Fridays. One Friday night, one of my friends invited me to a naming ceremony around Power Line, New Oko-Oba. I came back home drunk but my wife was not around. All my children, except the eldest, were asleep. “Immediately, I rushed in and raped her. I did not meet her as a virgin. But the second time, my wife was at home. “That Friday night, we were all watching a movie, when I suddenly stood up and went straight into my daughter’s room and started raping her. It was at that point that my wife caught me and started shouting. “My wife did not want to go to the police because of the embarrassment it would bring to the family and because of her reputation as a Customs officer. But her brother did.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  has arraigned the duo of Ugwuanwani Louis and Enudu Kenneth before Hon. Justice Dugbo-Oghoghorie of Federal High Court sitting in Enugu on a two count charge bothering on land scam and obtaining by false pretenses. The arraignment followed a petition received by EFCC in January 2016 where It was alleged that sometimes around February 2012, Kenneth Enudu approached and informed the petitioner of a layout in Enugu called 'Ekulu North Pocket layout' whereupon the Luis was introduced to him as the seller and after much negotiations, the sum of One Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,500,000.00) was paid to him for three plots of land.

There was bedlam at Abico Market unit 10 ward eight in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State on Wednesday when an elderly man, Mr. Solomon Omorogbe, an agent of the All Progressives Congress reportedly slumped and died at the polling unit.

It was gathered that the 58 years old man whose name was given as Mr. Solomon Omorogbe was said left his house to his polling unit early in the morning where he was to serve as a polling agent.

It was further gathered that the deceased slumped shortly after casting his vote.

He was said to have been rushed to Akugbe hospital by his first son, Charlie and other sympathizers, at the polling unit where he was confirmed dead by the doctor.

It was, however, gathered that the incident almost slowed down the voting process in the unit.

Nigeria’s foreign exchange market was tension-soaked yesterday, as the Naira raced towards N500/USD1. It closed at N490/ USD1 in the parallel market, with dealers expecting further rise today to hit the dreaded N500 mark.

Surprisingly, the Naira appreciated significantly to N305/ USD at the official interbank market same day, although dealers said foreign exchange was not available to most of the bids.

Meanwhile, the global investment bank, Morgan Stanley of United States of America, has warned that its MSCI Nigeria Indexes would be reclassified as Stand-alone next year, if currency restriction was instituted by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Also the World Bank said, yesterday, that Nigeria and South Africa would drag down Africa’s growth rate by 1.6 per cent in 2016, as strings of negative economic indicators continued.

A packed commuter train has ploughed into a station in Hoboken, New Jersey, injuring over 100 people and killing one person.

The rush-hour train did not slow down as it entered the station, hit a concrete block and was raised off the tracks, hitting the station ceiling.

Part of the station ceiling has collapsed. Emergency workers are on the scene, helping passengers evacuate the carriages. Many were trapped and injured.

Dozens of ambulances lined up near the station and more than 10 people have been taken to intensive care.

Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Thursday in Abuja thanked Edo electorate for voting Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying

“thank you for not changing the change’’.

Aregbesola said this when he broke the news of Obaseki’s victory as Edo governor-elect to newsmen at the “National Day of Solidarity with Cuba’’.

The event is a roundtable discussion on strengthening International Struggle against all forms of Blockade and Isolation against Cuba.

“I am happy that my party has won in Edo. I thank the Edo people for not changing the change. This change is here to stay,’’ he said.

He appealed to Nigerians to continue to bear with the administration in the face of economy recession.

“Please bear with us, it will soon be and the nation will come out in victory,’’ he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had, earlier in the day in Benin, declared Obaseki winner of the governorship election in the state.

Obaseki polled 319,483 votes to defeat his closest rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 253,173 votes.

It will be recalled that the slogan for the PDP campaigns in the state was

“change the change’’.
