Although newly crowned Nigeria league champions Rangers FC ended a 32-year wait for a trophy after a 4-0 win over El-Kanemi Warriors on Sunday, October 2, there was a sad end to the game as striker Ifeanyi Egwim sustained a horrific injury.
In a game watched by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state, deputy Senate president Ike Ekweremadu and other top government officials, the stadium went quiet after Egwim, who replaced Ocheme Edoh in the 83rd minute, was put through on goal in the 88th minute when goalkeeper Kazeem rushed out to bring him down.
At first sight, goalkeeper Kazeem was said to have collided with Egwim, which earned him a red card from the centre referee. However, replay showed that the striker seem to have landed really bad after his boot got stuck on the turf.
With the players and referee having their hands on the head, medical personnel were quickly invited with an ambulance as Egwim was immediately rushed him to hospital.
Reporters gathered that Ifeanyi Egwim is currently receiving treatment at the Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu state.
According to Rangers team doctor Emeka Onyia, Governor Ugwuanyi had expressed his willingness to fly Egwim abroad for the best medical treatment as he visited the player in hospital, but the hospital authorities were confident that the case was not beyond their competence.
