MANCHESTER CITY are plotting a £100million swoop for Lionel Messi, according to reports.
Pep Guardiola is desperate for a reunion with the superstar he built his hugely successful Barcelona side around.
The Argie hitman, 29, has a £215m buy-out clause in his contract, which runs out in 2018.
That means Barca would be forced to consider selling him for a reduced fee next summer or risk losing their prized asset for nothing if they cannot agree an extension.
Until recently, it would have been unthinkable for Messi to leave the Catalan giants but there have been reports of a strained relationship with Luis Enrique.
And with Luis Suarez and Neymar in peak form, the loss would not less significant although still extremely painful.
City are one of few clubs who can afford to take advantage of the situation and Guardiola’s presence would be a huge draw.
Paris Saint-Germain and rivals Manchester United would also be in the mix.
