Moments before the incident |
He was reported to be assassinated in front of shocked crowd by a suit and tie-clad gunman. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital following the grisly shooting but was later pronounced dead, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
The gunman was identified by Turkish authorities as 22-year-old Mevlut Mert Altintas, continued shouting and pointing his gun as Karlov lay wounded and attendees cowered in fear.
The gunman, who officials said was an off-duty police officer, was later shot and killed by Turkish police. According to reports, the attack was aimed to disrupt newly-re-established relations between Turkey and Russia, NY Daily confirmed.

After fatally shooting the Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, in the back, the gunman is heard shouting,
Allahu akbar (God is great). Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria! Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria!"
The ambassador was making a speech at the Museum of Modern Art when the gunman shot him in the back on Dec. 19, 2016. The shooting occurred just one day before diplomats from Turkey, Iran and Russia are scheduled to meet in Moscow to discuss the war-ravaged city Aleppo.
