Fire was opened on a Russian Ambassador 'Andrei Karlov' at a photo exhibition in Ankara, Turkey on Monday.
He was reported to be assassinated in front of shocked crowd by a suit and tie-clad gunman. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital following the grisly shooting but was later pronounced dead, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
The gunman was identified by Turkish authorities as 22-year-old Mevlut Mert Altintas, continued shouting and pointing his gun as Karlov lay wounded and attendees cowered in fear.
The gunman, who officials said was an off-duty police officer, was later shot and killed by Turkish police. According to reports, the attack was aimed to disrupt newly-re-established relations between Turkey and Russia, NY Daily confirmed.
