Luis Suarez has agreed a new contract with Barcelona, extending his stay at Camp Nou until 2021.
The Uruguayan striker becomes the second member of Barca’s front three to pen new terms with the club after Neymar agreed a deal until 2021 earlier this year. Lionel Messi is also expected to sign a new contract in the new year and his father is currently in the city for talks with president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Suarez’s current deal was due to expire in 2019 but it had become an open secret that he would renew before Christmas.
Bartomeu confirmed as much earlier this month and on Thursday the Blaugrana released a statement confirming that the 29-year-old had committed his future to the club for at least the next four-and-a-half years.
Reports in Diario Sport claim Suarez will match the €16 million per season that Neymar reportedly earns, while his buyout clause has been set at €200m. Suarez has proved a resounding success since joining Barca from Liverpool for €80m in 2014. Forming part of a front three with Messi and Neymar, he has scored 97 goals for the club in 116 appearances.
His total of 40 goals was the highest in La Liga last season as he became the first person other than Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Pichichi award since his compatriot Diego Forlan in 2009. Speaking in October he expressed his desire to retire at the club and his new contract takes him one step closer to that goal.

“I feel complete happiness because I am where I want to be. It’s now official, I never put any obstacles in the way of a renewal. I will never lose my ambition and enthusiasm for winning trophies and scoring goals,” Suarez said.
“My renewal has nothing to do with Neymar or Messi’s. Leo is great and he knows what he has to do and decide. “As a teammate I am available to help him but Leo is old enough to decide for himself. We are friends and we have a great relationship, but he is an adult and he has to take that decision.”

“I suffered a lot to make it here [Barca] and I want to enjoy it and continue fighting to complete my objectives, which is to win titles,” he said at the presentation of the European Golden Shoe. I would love to retire here, but that obliges you to stay at the top level for your whole career. But I’m not thinking about that now. There are only a few privileged enough to retire here.”Following Suarez’s new deal, Barcelona hope to make forward strides with the renovations of other key first team players, such as Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ivan Rakitic, Andres Iniesta and Messi.
